In this video I restored a 17mm ratchet which I bought from a private guy online.
I was told that this ratchet is approximately from the 1930's and it was found at a farm which was property of the sellers family. Since it has a fixed socket with 17mm it was most likely part of a tool kit for an agricultural vehicle.
It also works only one way, meaning that there most likely was another one for opening screws.

I want to add to my previous statement that many of the other ground support equipment mechanics I worked with did not like working on anything that did not have a power plant. They felt it was beneath them. I felt that if I did not do a good job that the jack would fail and the load it was carrying would fall on whoever was under it. That person would be terribly hurt or killed and of course the load which could be a vehicle or aircraft would be damaged. I commend you for your excellent work on bringing these abused and often forgotten pieces back to working condition.
Time 1:24 - you ask about the hole at the end of the ratchet. I'm surprised the hole did not go through. Many tools had a oiling hole with a ball bearing with a spring holding the ball gearing in a closed position. To oil the tool , you'd place the end of the oil can against the ball bearing with a slight push. That allowed the oil to bypass the ball bearing and fill the inner cavity of the tool. When you removed the tip of the oil can, the bearing would close the hole preventing the oil from seeping out. I've had Snap-On (and other brand) ratchets with this oiling feature. Revisiting ..... then again, the hole may have been part of the manufacturing process to drill out the hole for the detent spring and ball, then closed back up to keep the oil/grease inside the tool head ...... FWIW ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I maintained and repaired many of these hydraulic jacks as well as tripod jacks used to lift up aircraft while in the service. This video took me back over 40 years. Thanks.
Thank you for your comment, much appreciated!

Looks like a new one.
Thank you’
Noob question: Why did only the spring and that one other part get blued?
That’s a totally legit question. The spring got cold blued because it is located in the inside so I can’t really keep it clean. It happened to me many times that springs corrode and the cold bluing is for preventing that. The other part got cold blued only for aesthetic reasons. As you may have seen in my other ratchet restorations I really like the satin/brushed finish with some black details so I wanted to continue that “tradition” 🙂
@DrHutOfHandcraft Thanks man, keep up the great work!!
@@PeterDavid7KQ201 Thank you!
I realize this is an older video. However I actually have a similar nail puller like that but mine is forged steel built. Once you understand how to use it, it is an invaluable tool to remove nails that are even with, or even sunken into any type wood. I pulled hundreds of nails using such a tool. No other way to get them out without totally destroying the wood...
Thank you for your comment!
Simply but perfect
Thank you:)
Very good job folk
Thank you!
Simple little tool but beautiful restoration.
Glad you liked it 🙏🏼
Amazing work, dude! It looks better than new! 😃 Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thank you my friend. You too :)
Its amazing watching this and to realise how much tools changed! Noice
Absolutely, yes!
Very nice work Doc. I enjoyed watching it. 😊
Thank you very much Dave, glad you liked it! 🙂
What blasting media was used?
Glasbeads 200-400µm 🙂
Nice job bro 👌👌👌👍👍👍👍
Thank you!
Another great restoration 👌👌
Thank you!

Is there a companion for unbolting?
Most likely there was one, yes. But unfortunately I don’t have it.
You did a great job of smoothing the surface around the engraving without removing the engraving itself. ❤ I guess that next you could restore a 1930s tractor to go with the wrench... 🤔
That would be so cool 😂 Thank you once again my friend! 🙏🏼
Wow, what a fantastic job.
Thank you!
What a cool tool! It looks a bit like a cartoony monster when it ratchets, but that's just my poetic brain doing its thing.
Very creative 😄 Thank you for your comment!
It only turns right? Strange concept.
... you only even need to tighten stuff on an old tractor. Loosening of nuts and bolts is usually done automatically when you drive it. 😀
I am pretty sure that it was part of a kit and there probably was another one for loosening the screws and nuts 😄
Perfect work❤
Thank you! 🙏🏼
nice
Thank you!
I don’t usually do nickel plating because I don’t like it and mostly it’s not necessary. Also nickel isn’t that great of a corrosion protection plus it is one of the most common allergens 🙂 Thank you for your comment!
Beautiful job as we have come to expect. That cold bluing worked a treat. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching, glad you liked it!
nickel plating had to do more

Hello mister beautiful restoration good job
Thank you!
The hardest part about restoring these is that None of their owners ever bother going in to oil any of the interior moving parts!
Never thoughts about this, but yeah you are so right! 😄
Gosh! It must take Ages to do 2k coats of clear!
Yeah it takes some while, but it’s worth it! 😄
Okay… I really dig the Brass trick! Especially how it gives a uniquely nuanced result! It would look Awesome on historic replicas! Very Clever!
Thank you so much, glad you liked it!
Super gemacht!Die 13ner 1/2"Nuss ist sogar aus DDR Produktion!Das ist ja echt ein Ding!Wie ist die denn dorthin gekommen?!
Danke!
@@Werkzeugsammler Sehr interessant, vielen Dank! :)
Well done looks great , will use it as a show piece not to work with
Thank you! I actually use it sometimes 😄
👍👍👍
🙏🏼
It does not need putty. Why did you put it on it? Because it does not have a single scratch
To make a smooth finish on the paintjob later. That’s a standard procedure. As you can see before I used the primer there were some spots were putty remained. These are the spots that needed putty 🙂
The coarser gear used in old ratchets have a lot more degree of angle per tooth with the smaller engine compartments in new cars the old ratchets won't always work in the space available.
Yup
Great restoration.
Thank you!
Why did you decide to use a metal wedge in the top vs a wooden one?
Because I made the handle out of two parts of wood and glued them together (which isn’t ideal but I didn’t have another option back then) and I thought that making a cut in the top of the handle for a wooden wedge would weaken the handle. Don’t know if that makes sense tbh, but that is what I thought back then. Now I would make a handle out of a solid piece and probably use a wooden wedge.
